Why was she here? It was difficult to say. She was a far ways from home but she’d been feeling restless. And so far, none of her travels had taken her to where she might find... well, whatever his name was, and her daughter, Aella. She really wanted to find Aella; Corinna had decided it was time that she took her daughter back. Surely the girl was old enough to take care of herself a little more; surely Corinna could manage a child now. She’d seen more, she’d observed other women with their babies and young children. She felt confident she could make it work. Somehow.

But those thoughts were far from her mind as she surveyed, from a distance, the atrocity before her. A bridge. She hated bridges. Not that she could begrudge humans their need to cross the water, but if they expected the water to cooperate with them, what right had they to bind it? It was appalling, and sad, and she watched the people bustle about, cringing to think of how they too must leave their waste behind, probably in the river that nourished and accommodated – because they hadn’t given it a choice – them. It was horrid. She wished she might help but, until the rest of the naiads woke up, they would be little able to protect their waters. And there certainly wasn’t anything Corinna could do. She was no nymph of a mighty river or ocean or lake. No, she was simply the guardian of a tiny, slow bubbling stream.

But she wouldn’t wish the responsibility of more.

Sitting on the edge of forest, far from the town though she could still see the tiny figures hurrying about, she wondered at their rush. They were curious creatures, humans. They always seemed to have something to do. They never sat and enjoyed the quiet, or rarely, anyway. Corinna could sit for days on end, just telling herself stories, just listening to the ocean, just doing nothing. Time meant nothing to her, there was no hurry. Why couldn’t they be more like that? She supposed it was because they had so much less time than she did.

Stretching a little, Corinna pushed her legs out in front of her and sighed.  She wondered if there were any other naiads awake, anywhere. Surely she couldn’t be the only one! She’d look forward to meeting one such as herself.

Sitting still, back straight, eyes fixed firmly ahead though her gaze was distant, she must have looked like a statue to any observers who might see her. Still, she was far enough away from the crowd that she didn't think she'd been spotted. It wasn't as though she felt any danger; what was there to be afraid of?

NOTE: I haven’t decided quite when this is set yet; it doesn’t matter to me really. So if someone wants to join and it works best for you, being set before Catalyst or after or whenever, just let me know.

OOC: I hope you don't mind if I reply. I need to develop Kalo's character more. (So this could be set before or after The Catalyst).  Smiley

IC: Kalo stayed silent, watching the bridge as it was being finished. The humans were close, very close, to completing their task. It made the gryphon sick to watch it, as he thought of how they would soon be able to simply swarm across in huge numbers, destroying everything the Narnians were fighting for. It made him recall his own past, when they had swarmed into and destroyed his old forest, and that wasn’t something he wished to remember. Unlike last time, though, he could have a claw in stopping this. He wasn’t sure what Caspian or the other head Narnians would do with the information he would bring back, but the act of gathering it and reporting it to those in charge of their defenses was productive in itself.

A small wisp of movement, like water flowing over rocks, caught his eye. The gryphon trained his sight on a sheltered area near the side of the river, where he had seen the flicker of movement. He saw something behind the foliage, and obviously of a hominid nature. But it didn’t look Telmarine, or even threatening. However, it was hard to judge intention when your subject remained perfectly motionless behind layers of shrubbery.

Kalo sank slowly back into the darkness of the trees, allowing the shadows to close over him and melt away his outline in the gloom. His ash-gray feathers and fur were absorbed neatly into the darkness, and his soft footfalls, despite large size, caused him to all but disappear. Only his scent would be registered, but the creatures that could scent him were mostly on his side. If the Telmarines had dogs, it could give him away, but he was far enough that if there were dogs, he wouldn’t be smelled.

The gryphon padded closer to the shape, and as he ducked and wove with his head, in a very birdlike fashion, he found a more clear vantage point. The figure was that of a young human woman, though she appeared different than natural women. There was something Narnian and magical about her. Was she some sort of nymph or naiad? Some magical creature of the earth? Kalo drew forward again, his senses clearly telling him that this was not a human woman.

“Hello?” he called tentatively, risking exposing himself. He had to make the gamble, though; if this was some sort of Narnian creature, his efforts would be rewarded, at least in the knowledge that more of them survived. And if it wasn’t, he could get away easily enough. It would take time from his spying, but it wouldn’t be that bad of a loss.

She saw the gryphon coming out of the corner of her eye – at least, if she had wanted to run away, she would have had time to. But no, Corinna sat as still as she had been the whole time she’d been there, watching with a small smile the way the humans hurried about and tried to... well she didn’t really know what they were trying to do. Actually, maybe later she would sneak closer. Maybe later she would better observe them. From here, she couldn’t see much but the view was rather nice. They were noisy – she could hear them from here, though they did not sound as individual voices but one great racket coming up through the forest. She did not particularly like humans – she certainly didn’t trust them, not quickly – but she had no great qualms with other creatures. Even though she’d had little opportunity to see, or personally meet, any of them. They seemed like good enough sorts to her.

So she was hardly surprised at all to hear a tentative ‘hello’, though her eyes did light up a little, and she turned her head to get a better look at the large creature standing not too far away from her. “Hello,” she replied quietly, standing slow and easy. Movement was never much of an effort for her, it came so naturally. She walked, and moved in general, with a sort of flow – something that could be attributed almost solely to nymphs of the water sort. Nymphs of the trees, they were different. Still graceful, of course, as all nymphs were, but it was just... different. But perhaps Corinna could only really see the difference because she was, herself, a naiad.

The quiet ‘hello’ was all she uttered, he was lucky to even get that much. Corinna was a woman of few words; she preferred to watch the world happen, rather then be a part of it. That was why she’d been so well distanced from the town, so hidden by the trees and bushes. It wasn’t because she was afraid, though she hadn’t really counted on being spotted. It was because she liked the quiet much more than she liked aimless conversation. Turning her eyes away from the gryphon for a brief moment to see if anything interesting seemed to be happening in the town a good distance away, she decided that she was done watching them and she turned back to the large creature who stood close.

She nearly turned and walked away, but decided against it. She was always changing her mind, and rather rashly so, too. She was surprised to see a gryphon here; all of the more interesting creatures tended to stay away from the humans. She didn’t understand why and it made her incredibly curious. “Are you here to watch them too?” She motioned towards the bustling town. “They are really quite entertaining.”

((Ooc: Nope, I don’t at all mind you joining! xD This’ll be interesting, she’s not the overly chatty sort.))

Kalo inched closer as the naiad’s attention seemed to shift to him for an instant before refocusing on the humans. He moved smoothly past the bush and stood at the edge of the clearing, in full view of her. Keeping himself hidden could convey the wrong message; he didn’t have to keep his presence secret from Narnians, even though it was always in his nature to. He glanced with her back at the bridge, but focused back on her when she stood up in a single fluid motion. Yes, she was definitely a water nymph; a naiad. He gave a slow nod at her replied “hello.”

Her attention kept shifting from him to the humans, and several times he thought he saw her tense as if about to depart. She seemed of a flighty personality, even if her actions did not display it, but Kalo wasn’t sure if this was because she was a naiad or was just her individual nature. . He had not met any other naiads to base his judgment upon, so either way, he would just have to wait and learn more about her personality. Hopefully she would decide to stay a bit longer. Perhaps he could even gain a new ally for Narnia.

He was a little surprised when she decided to further the conversation, for she seemed of a quiet nature. He gave another nod. “Yes, I was watching them from a bit closer,” he replied silently. He gave a small snort when she remarked on how entertaining they were. “They would be more entertaining if I did not know what they were doing. They are building that bridge into our land, so that they may invade. It makes me wish I had the power to destroy their little construction,” he continued in a rather cynical voice. The Telmarines were getting closer to the ability to invade in full force with every blow of the hammer and placement of wooden plank. Kalo wished he was a dragon, able to swoop down and rip apart the wood and metal in a flurry of claws and teeth and tail. He was a gryphon though; any attack would result in his arrow-filled body washing up downstream. It wasn’t a pleasant thought.

“Why are you here? Few of your kin are awake,” he asked, growing curious about the naiad. He hadn’t seen one before, in all his time of spying and scouting, though he had heard rumors that a few were awake. It seemed strange to find one now, so close to the Telmarines and their work, despite being next to a river as well.
