About You
Name: You may call me Raeka.
Age: --
How did you find us: I was sort of just searching around, mainly on google, and came across this site a few times. Then I just started watching it, kind of getting used to the characters and the way things are done, and now I've joined!
Rules Password: [Password Accepted ~Jordan]

Character Basics
Name: Myrrine Diodorus
Alias(es)/Nickname(s): None.
Gender: Female
Age: Myrrine is bound to a very old, large, beech tree which is roughly 350 years in age. In human years she is fairly old, perhaps around 70 or 80. However in appearance she looks as though she is only 25.
Race: Dryad (from the Beech)
Status/Title:  Keeper of the Broken (Healer)
Affiliation: For Narnia!

Character Appearance
Hair: Myrrine's dark, black hair hangs in gentle waves about her face and shoulders.
Eyes: Green
Distinguishing marks: Myrrine is obviously a Dryad, for her skin and hair have a certain naturalistic beauty that is only found in goddesses of Earth and Water. Though Dryads take on a similar appearance to humans, there is a certain difference that you will always recognize after seeing a Dryad once. That difference is hard to describe unless you've laid eyes on a Dryad, but those who have say it is as though their skin almost has a pale green to it, their hair has a certain leaf-like touch, and their eyes seem to have the sparkle of nature itself. However, many of the trees have been asleep for a long time, and many of these spirits have not been seen by others for years, making Myrrine's appearance breathtaking to others.

General Personality:
A quiet, reserved type, Myrrine is rarely the first to speak up. She can be very shy, and is usually at least a little reserved, especially since the Telmarines have taken over. However, she is very fun loving, in a sweet and innocent sort of way. Midnight dances under the twinkling stars-- that is what Myrrine misses the most about Old Narnia. Her tinkling laugh is beautiful-- the type that makes others feel they must laugh as well. Before the Telmarine invasion, Myrrine would float through the woods, gentle laughter spreading its wings as it soared away over the trees. She takes in all the joy she can in life, and is eager to make the most of everything. This joy has slowly been decreasing as her life goes on, but she still holds on to the hope of Narnia someday returning to its former self.

Despite that, Myrrine has a much more serious attitude than many other Dryads. She is very quiet, especially since the magic has been slowly sucked from her land. She does have magical powers, and the gift of healing has been granted her. It is possible there are other gifts in her as well, which have simply gone unnoticed and forgotten. Myrrine's quiet countenance seems to add to her soft beauty, and when she does speak her voice flows gently and softly, like a sweet breeze blowing through the forest. She cares deeply about the other Narnians, and if there is anything she can do to bring Narnia back as she remembers, she will.

Myrrine is very devout when she begins to believe in something or someone. Her loyalty is almost unusual, it is so strong. She has always believed in Aslan, and she will be faithful to him till the end. Though she has never actually laid eyes on the lion, Myrrine is positive that he really does exist. Not only that, but she also believes in his goodness, and his protection. Despite everything that has happened to her and the other Narnians, Myrrine is loyal to his name and full-heartedly believes he has not forsaken Narnia. She longs to stand in his great presence that has only been described to her, to feel his breath breathed over her tree. Even if Myrri never lays eyes on Aslan, it is sure that she will die loving him immensely.

This same loyalty extends to other creatures-- even to a few humans, like Prince Caspian, who prove themselves worthy of trust. However, this extreme devout spirit can be a bad thing, as Myrrine is just as extreme in her hatred and temperaments. When a creature gives her cause for anger, Myrrine detests that creature with a deep passion. Because of the Telmarines, nearly every human is distrusted, and hated, by Myrrine. Her habit is to vanish away into her tree whenever she sees a Son of Adam, or a Daughter of Eve. Once someone is on Myrrine's bad side, it takes a very long time for her to think highly of them, if she ever will at all. The same goes for those on her good side; she is very loyal to those she loves. Myrrine will allow those who've gained her trust to make endless amounts of mistakes, hardly ever doubting them. She is a very willing listener, and has a sweet attitude that most find delightful.

Character History
Parents: Eliud and Alexina Diodorus

Siblings:
.| Isayrus - brother
.| Karpos - brother
.| Ourania - sister
.| Nomiko - brother

General History:
Though the exact date of Myrrine's birth isn't recorded clearly, she does know where she comes from. Her arrival to the world was before the evil Telmarines invaded; the days when Narnia was free and thriving. She remembers the night dances when fauns, satyrs, nymphs, dryads, and all sorts of river and wood gods and goddesses gathered on the Dancing Lawn, charming one another with dances and songs. The Narnia she loved was found in those days, and it was impossible to be forgotten.

The day the Telmarines invaded is clearly remembered by Myrrine. The trees, her friends and her family, were chopped down. The animals were forced into labor, and many lost their ability to speak. All mystical creatures, such as fauns, centaurs, and the like, were desperate, and they had to search for a place of refuge. Most of these Narnians made themselves scarce in caves and hideouts. As for the trees-- they all seemed to simply slip away into themselves, that is if they weren't cut down. The once spirited, laughter-filled Dryads were falling into a deep, deep sleep. The Dancing Lawn, once full of music and joy, was left empty, and the true Narnia seemed to slip away into silence, almost becoming a myth.

For Myrrine, however, this was not true. Of course, she did retreat into her tree much more than before, and she scarcely ventured far, mind you, but she couldn't bear to let herself become stuck in that tree, sleeping away all of her happiness. Many of Myrrine's friends, and all of her family, had been considered lumber to the evil Telmarines-- something Myrrine was seeking to avenge. The few Dryads who remained had become completely cut off from the rest of Narnia.

Even now, Myrrine would slip through the forest, often coming to the Dancing Lawn, simply to gaze at it. How she longed for those olden days to return! Occasionally she would notice other Narnians, but Myrrine had become a bit frightened of showing her existence for the past few years. By now, it seemed that even the other Narnians doubted the Dryads in the trees; some even seemed to doubt their existence. But Myrrine existed nonetheless, and she often stood silently among the trees, listening to any news that might be spreading among those Narnians who were in hiding. Eventually, the eavesdropping did gain her important news-- something striking, confusing, and a little exciting, all wrapped up at once: a prince was here to lead them.

The only humans Myrrine knew were the Telmarines, and she had a deep hatred for them. No matter how much Myrrine detested most humans, she did know that Narnia seemed to thrive only when a Son of Adam took the throne. When Myrrine discovered that one was here to lead them now, she found herself rejoicing. However, at the news of his being Telmarine her attitude changed completely. It angered her to even think of a Telmarine believing he could rule these beautiful creatures of Narnia! Why did they listen to him? Wasn't he a horrible man, bound to only bring more destruction? It was hardly possible that he was anything better than Miraz, who was happily controlling the kingdom of Narnia, while hating the true Narnians.

Myrrine was a talented eavesdropper, as was mentioned before, and she managed to catch glimpses of this new prince. After hearing his words on the outskirts of a Narnian meeting, her mind began to change. Caspian, she had discovered that his name was such, seemed to really love Narnia. It also seemed that this prince wanted that same old Narnia back; the one that Myrrine loved so much. The whole meeting was wonderful and exciting for Myrrine to watch. Finally to see so many Narnians at once-- it was like a very old and sweet dream that had just been brought to life.

After watching that meeting, Myrrine decided to make herself known to the other Narnians. It was time, she decided, and even though she was still quite shy about meeting all these Narnians after so long, she knew it was needed. The gift of healing was not meant to go unused, and Myrrine knew that simple fact all too well. As much as wars frightened and upset the quiet Dryad, she knew she must be willing to take part in one. Her passionate hate for the Telmarines helped her to make the decision sooner. Besides, this was her country, her life, and her happiness. Both for herself, and the many creatures who were just as proud to be Narnian as she was herself. Yes, very soon Myrrine would appear to the others...

Other/Notes: Myrrine's family all died when their trees were chopped down. Myrrine was the only survivor among her family, and most of her friends.

Also, I'm very open to criticism, I'm a little scratchy on my Narnian history, culture, etc. because I don't own the books and have no way of reading them at the moment.

Sample
RP Sample:

Myrrine stood in the gentle grass, simply letting it brush across her feet and ankles. There was a sweet scent flowing throughout the air, like that of a fresh blossom, or perhaps it was from an aged pine tree. In general it gave off the beauty of springtime in the forest. Ah yes, that lovely time of year when the springs and rivers rushed down the mountains in delight, and the flowers sprang up from the ground. The branches of trees became coated in beautiful, green leaves, and everything seemed perfect. It was best experienced in the forests, at least in Myrrine's mind, though she is a bit biased being as she is a tree.

Myrinne loved this time of year, in fact it could very nearly be her favorite. The excitement of all the new plants and animals; it was lovely. Summer was a beautiful time of year as well. It had been especially wonderful in the times when Narnians gathered for dances and music and wondrous fun. Myrrine really did enjoy most of the seasons, except for winter; Myrri did not enjoy winter. It was always cold and snowy outside, and the creatures tended to stay in much more. During those days when the wind howled and the sun hid, Myrrine often slipped into her tree, and stayed there for long periods of time. Ah, but when the spring came, then Myrrine came out.

Her most looked forward to event were the nights on the Dancing Lawn, but, as of now, that lawn was empty. It was a drastic condition in Myrrine?s mind. The Dancing Lawn should be full of happy animals and creatures singing and dancing and sharing joy together. It used to be a symbol of laughter and happiness, and for Myrrine it still was. Though it seemingly was long forgotten, Myrrine still went there often, simply to stand off in the trees and feel that old feeling of peaceful glee. In fact, she was in that exact place now, wishing the fauns to come sauntering in with their flutes.

Now it was quite different, of course, but it was still a happy memory if nothing else. Myrrine would never forget its loveliness, nor the many pleasant memories. Perhaps this Prince Caspain would be able to give the Narnians what they needed. Perhaps they could once more spend enchanted evenings on this lawn. Hopefully that day would come soon, for Myrri wanted to wake up the trees and listen to the sound of a faun's flute. To watch the naiads and the nymphs as they danced through the nights...

Oh, if only Aslan would come!

Wow, this is a great application! Your attention to detail is wonderful, and though you say you're not too certain about Narnian history and culture, everything looks spot on to me.

I guess the only question I have is this: you say in the appearance section, "Though Dryads take on a similar appearance to humans, there is a certain difference that you will always recognize after seeing a Dryad once." What is that "certain difference"?

Oh, also, how old is Myrrine, for a dryad? I know she's bound to a tree 350 years old, but compared to other Beech dryads, would she be a young adult, middle-aged, elderly, etc.?

Finally, I would give your application another read through. While I didn't find any spelling errors, I did find a few grammatical ones (mostly in the area of punctuation).  For one thing, remember that semi-colons divide a sentence into two sentences that would make sense on their own. (Also remember that commas can't be used for this purpose.) Also, the second paragraph in your history section is a little awkward. Perhaps stick with straight past tense instead of past progressive? There were a few other grammatical mistakes, so hopefully you catch them, but if you don't, it's not a huge deal.

I look forward to looking at this again once you've edited it!

Thank you, Misha! And as far as knowing about Narnian culture and whatnot-- the internet is a beautiful resource. Hehe.

Hm, I tried to change the "Dryad's difference in appearance" thing a bit. Hopefully it's more clear this time.... I wasn't sure exactly what to say, because C.S. Lewis never completely described them, except that one would never forget how they look after you've seen them. At least I think he said that... But anyways, I hope its more clear now! ^^

Hm, hm. I don't know much about Dryads aging, so I took a wild stab at the way she would look... Do they even die unless their tree does? (This is where my lack of knowledge is presenting itself. Meh.)

Ah yes, me and my semicolons/commas. Gah, it's a horrible habit I have with semicolons. Thank you very much for pointing that out! ^^

I hope I caught everything. Please tell me if I didn't! :]

Lewis did describe some dryads in Prince Caspian. Let me write out an excerpt from that section.

Quote
Lucy's eyes began to grow accustomed to the light, and she saw the trees that were nearest her more distinctly. A great longing for the old days when the trees could talk in Narnia came over her. She knew exactly how each one of the trees would talk if only she could wake them, and what sort of human form it would put on. She looked at a silver birch: it would have a soft, showery voice and would look like a slender girl, with hair blown all about her face, and fond of dancing. She looked at the oak: he would be a wizened, but hearty old man with a frizzled beard and warts on his face and hands, and hair growing out of the warts. She looked at the beech under which she was standing. Ah—she would be the best of all. She would be a gracious goddess, smooth and stately, the lady of the wood.

There's a second section, just before she meets Aslan.

Quote
[Lucy] got up, her heart beating wildly, and walked towards them. There was certainly a noise in the glade, a noise such as trees make in the high wind, though there was no wind to-night. Yet it was not exactly an ordinary tree-noise either. Lucy felt there was a tune in it, but she could not catch the tune any more than she had been able to catch the words when the trees had so nearly talked to her the night before. But there was, at least, a lilt; she felt her own feet wanting to dance as she got nearer. And now there was no dought that the trees were really moving—moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance ("And I suppose," thought Lucy, "when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.") She was almost among them now.

The first tree she looked at seemed at first glance not to be a tree at all but a huge man with a shaggy beard and great bushes of hair. She was not frightened: she had seen such things before. But when she looked again he was only a tree, though he was still moving. You couldn't see whether he had feet or roots, of course, because when trees move they don't walk on the surface of the earth; they wade in it as we do in water. The same thing happened with ever tree she looked at. At one moment they seemed to be the friendly, lovely giant and giantess forms which the tree-people put on when some good magic has called them into full life: next moment they all looked like trees again. But when they looked like trees, it was like strangely human trees, and when they looked like people, it was like strangely branchy and leafy people—and all the time that queer lilting, rustling, cool, merry noise.

I honestly don't know much about dryads, but I'd assume they'd live as long as their tree, typically. I don't know if they can be die without their tree dying. 25 years old for a 350 year old tree seems a bit young to me, but I don't know how long beech trees live. So I'm fine with leaving this the way it is.

For future reference, the quotes Jordan mentions above as well as the fact that Lewis mentions in Prince Caspian that the "queenly beeches stood still and adored [Aslan]" will definitely help. However, we haven't been too picky on appearances before this, so I'm not going to require you to expand on that section. Keep in mind, though, that you still might want to do so, especially if you want Myrrine to be more competitive for Character of the Month sometime.

You still have some grammatical errors that it would be nice for you to fix, but since this application is so well done in other respects, I'm going to go ahead and say that it is

Accepted!

Oops, I'm really sorry I wasn't keeping up with this! I was gone for a few days...

Yes, I realize that 25 is very young, but I was thinking more in the way she appears. Do Dryads look older as they grow older? *scratches head*

And Jordan, thank you so much for those quotes!! Very helpful! I wish I had the books to read...

I'll try and fix those things up, Misha. ^^ I'm really sorry for taking so long! And thank you for the acceptance! Yayyy! On to RPing!

edit// I went ahead and said that she would be about 70/80 in human years, but looks about 25. I hope that's more clear. :]
