It was not an emotion Lord Drinian typically felt--one he usually kept under guard--but it hit with such overwhelming force that Drinian, walking from Miraz's tent to his own, shook with it. Rage.

The indignity had been too much to bear.

Drinian had simply voiced in passing his assent of a proposed plan: rations for surrender. No sooner had he done this than Miraz had called him into his tent alone to revisit the sensitive and menacing ground they had tread several times before. He was reminded of his duchy. Of how they fully depended on his judgment. Drinian had been politic enough to understand that the reminder was a threat of retaliation should Drinian waver in his resolve. With all of his most capable men guarding the Telmarine front, Bernal was vulnerable and in a precarious situation. It was this unspoken threat which brought Drinian out here, supporting a man he did not view as a king. Supporting a murderer and usurper instead of his childhood friend, whom a scout had informed was suffering in a sick Narnian camp.

It was having the words spoken which brought Drinian to anger. The intrusiveness and added hostility . . .  Miraz had sensed it immediately and had attempted to pacify him with a captaincy in the king's navy. A laughing matter, as there was no fleet, though Drinian had longed for one.

Drinian had just reached for the flap of his tent, ducking his head, when he heard the hoarse cry of a soldier cut through the dying winds of the storm. "My Lord!" Straightening, he walked towards the source, pausing when he reached a clearing in the woods, now hearing and seeing nothing out of the ordinary.

OOC: This can be a tag, or I can continue on with NPCs. Hope the setup is alright.

Gavin had decided to take one of his birds out into the forest to practice that morning. The young man had stayed out longer than he had wanted to.  Jinx, the falcon that Gavin had taken hunting that day, had been doing so well. He had caught three mice and a rabbit. The bird was a raising star among the many that Gavin worked with. Even so, the pair of them were in the middle of the forest. There were many times where Gavin had lost sight of Jinx, but the bird always came back.

On his way out of the forest, Gavin let Jinx loose. He knew the bird would follow him. Eventually. Even if Jinx didn’t follow, he would come back when Gavin whistled for him. Hopefully. The sound of leaves rustling over head made the falconer look up. The fleeting shadow of a bird zeroed in on prey sent Gavin running, following the bird. Near the edge of the forest, noblemen’s clothing caught Gavin’s eye. Looking up again, Gavin saw Jinx was headed straight for the nobleman. The bird had certainly earned his name. “My Lord,” Gavin called, attempting to warn the man of what was coming for him, “duck!” Just then, Jinx shot through the trees and pulled up just in time to miss the lord.

“I am so sorry, my Lord,” Gavin said apologetically. He gave a sharp whistle and Jinx returned to his arm.

(OOC: Mind? I love it! There are two things, though, that might make this tricky. 1) this should take place about 1 day after Drinian is in Telmar -- see "Horses and Stablehands" and 2) Drinian and Owen have discussed Gavin a bit, and Drinian has met him before. I'm not sure if Gavin would remember Drinian, but Drinian knows who Gavin is. Nothing personal: just who he is.)

Drinian looked skyward when he felt a shadow pass over him, then, hearing the yell behind him, spun around. Then, upon command, ducked.

The perplexity on Drinian's face was apparent as he straightened, if not a little residual frustration from his conversation with Miraz.  This dissipated as he saw who it was that approached, and Drinian gave a good-natured smile, however small.

"No apologies needed, Gavin. I probably--" Drinian hesitated, "ought to have been more self-aware," he said, shocked at how close he had come to misspeaking and saying the words in his head: that he supposed he probably smelled of rat after talking to Miraz.

After a deep breath in which he inhaled the scent of cedar hanging about in the woods, his expression cleared and his smile grew easier. "It could be no fault of your own. Unless, of course you set him upon me?" he challenged teasingly.

Drinian once more looked into the sky, wondering what need Miraz would have for a falconer in his camp. He had some ideas, but didn't care for any of them. but, like the falcon, Drinian also well realized that the servants -- and weren't they all -- of the king would be set upon others by command, whether they willed it or no.

But Drinian would *not* have it.

Gavin breathed in sharply when Drinian suggested that the falconer had set the bird on him. "Jinx is a rebellious creature, sir," Gavin said quickly, "I doubt that he could have killed you unless he really wanted to." He let his gaze wander over to the large bird on his arm briefly before returning his attention to Drinian. Jinx cocked his head to one side and looked at Drinian curiously and then flapped his wings restlessly.

The falconer put a hood over the falcon's head to keep the creature calm. Jinx was one of the most impatient birds Gavin had ever worked with, but the man loved the bird anyway. "What brings you out this far, my Lord?" Gavin asked.

To Gavin's hasty defense, Drinian smiled softly and nodded amiably. "I'm sure of it," he said, taking a step back in spite of himself as Jinx's wings fluttered, chuckling at himself softly as he did so.

"What brings you out this far, my Lord?" Gavin asked.

Drinian nodded towards his tent, which lay a stone's throw away. "I always make sure I stand closest of any of the Telmarine Army to Bernal," he said, looking behind them towards the river, whose banks delineated the border between Beruna and Bernal, his duchy. "Here, this means camping on the outskirts of the camp."

He considered Gavin and Jinx a moment before asking, "Has your birding been successful today?" Once more he considered what purpose it would serve to have the falcons here. Perhaps Miraz was of a mind to use the non-magical creatures of Telmar against the Talking Beasts of Narnia. Drinian's countenance clouded as he considered.
