General Personality: Abenzio Tuathal Deverell does not seem to be much because he does not reveal much, and he likes it that way. Openness is vulnerability, and Thal does all he can to keep himself guarded physically, emotionally, and mentally. Often times, all three are served by guarding information and avoiding attachments or causes. He is the kind of man who does not allow himself to linger on thoughts, to linger in places, or to linger in his gazes. Notwithstanding, Thal is not without emotion. On the contrary, he has strong convictions and thoughts which often run deeper than blood. These emotions are so buried, hidden, and protected that, almost as though they have never seen the light of day, they are rather delicate yet hardened.
Abenzio Tuathal Deverell is more than you think because he does not want you to think of him.
Cold rather than shy, Thal is compact. He keeps his thoughts tightly buried in armour and has grown accustomed to keeping on the move. As one having been hurt, he is not afraid to hurt others if it is in an effort of self-protection or in defense of the few values and people he does hold dear. He trusts no one but his siblings. Not his father, or his countrymen, or the King. Four people in the world have captured his trust, and he would guard them with his life. But these are the only ones, to any other he will remain as cold as stone.
But Thal remains hidden from the world, preferring to observe, to watch, and to take all down. Often times, he appears the hardened, menacing threat in the corner. He is much like his father, though he would be horrified if anyone ever told him so. He tends to run from things, rather than discussing them. Beneath his cold, seemingly hardened personality is a person who would rather flee to war than conquer his own problems. He can seem so brave, yet he can be so desperate. His home life had been a mess as a teenager, and his father the worst role model. As much as Thal wanted absolutely nothing to do with his father, he seemed to be headed in the same direction.
Thal loves a good challenge, something to divert him from his own world and take over his mind. War tends to fill that void quite well, and Thal takes to it increasingly. He is very skilled with a sword, and he isn't too bad at handling a bow either. Thal has a love for the deepest, darkest time at night -- he always has. He will often sit outside, in the complete silence, drinking it in. He'll sit there for hours, thinking about life and problems and questions he has. It is during times like those that he makes all of his decisions, and decides his opinions on various subjects that occur in his lifetime.

General History:The Deverell family background and history is a long and confusing one, perhaps even the type that might bore some. It is, however, quite interesting if perceived in the correct way. Being a history, it cannot be avoided whether those that precede it would wish to avoid it or not. A person's background often helps form them into what and who they are. Some rise above their background, others dig themselves into a worse situation than they were originally found. Yet others go without noticing the change, perhaps it's there, or perhaps it's not. Sometimes it is impossible to know.
Keir Deverell was from Telmar. No, not the Telmar in Narnia where King Miraz ruled, but the real Telmar which seemed to have been forgotten by so many in Narnia. It might be a stretch, however, to say he was actually
from Telmar, though he was born there. His mother was a native of the real Telmar, while his father was from Calormen. That story is quite long and confusing, and even Keir himself did not know the whole of it. However, it came to be that his parents met and Keir was born in Telmar, though they moved when he was a very small child and he hardly remembers living there at all.
So, Keir grew up in Calormen, and seemed to be more from there than anywhere else. It was strange though, in the end Keir married a young Telmarine girl from Narnia. Sabrina, his new wife, had grown up mostly in Narnia, but her mother had also been from Archenland. It was such a strange combination of roots and heritage that it nearly confused even themselves. But they did love one another and that was all that mattered to them.
Because there really was no common homeland for Thal's family, he grew up as a wanderer. He was born in Narnia, and knew it only as the Telmarines had made it. However, some of his life was spent in Archenland, Calormen, and he even traveled all the way to the real Telmar once. Despite that, most of Thal's life was lived in Calormen, and later he returned to Narnia once more.
In his fifth year Thal's family packed up and moved to Archenland, where they spent three years. At eight they hauled off and spent four years in the real Telmar, to the west of Narnia. It was there that Sabrina, Thal's mother, fell deathly ill. She requested to go back to Narnia, her homeland, and be with her friends and neighbors again. They had traveled but for a few days and it was the end; she was gone. Twelve year old Thal wept that day, for his mother was the only caring and stable person he had ever known. The bond he held with his mother was like no other. Now it was forever broken.
What brought more despair upon the young boy was the entrance into his life of a "new mother." After Sabrina's death, Keir took his four sons and planted himself in the city of Tashbaan, in Calormen. It was there that he met, and in very little time -- without consulting his children in the least -- married Jazella. Now, Jazella was not particularly vicious, but she was not at all her step-sons idea of a mother. She scowled at them all day long and blamed every possible problem on the children. There was no showing of love, or affection, or pride in that household any longer, and Keir continued to travel, leaving his children with Jazella for weeks on end. For the eldest two boys, who were now fifteen and thirteen, it was something they could stand. But the youngest two, nine and four, needed security, not yelling and blame. For some reason Jazella always took her anger out on the youngest, though the others could never understand why. It was as though she hated that Keir's former wife could bring him children and she could not. She had miscarried numerous children, and the sight of these in her own house only seemed to anger her more terribly.
It was during these weeks that their father was away when Aanon and Thal stood up for their younger brothers. They would yell and fight with Jazella, occasionally they would even leave the house for a few nights to escape her madness. Sleeping on the street was far from ideal, but it was much better than their raging step-mother, who always began going slightly crazy after being left alone with the boys for a week. Sometimes Anaan would get them all together and they'd spend weeks on their own, just to get away from the hatred they always felt. When Keir was home, things were slightly better. Jazella calmed down, and little Drostan was left feeling a little more secure. For the older ones, however, it only gave them anger towards their father. Jazella would tell him stories, sometimes not even true, and he would take her word for it. That would result in a sound beating, which left Anaan and Thal feeling only resentment to both of what should have been the most influential characters in their lives.
Thal had already reached sixteen, his brothers being eighteen, twelve, and seven, when their step-mother gave birth to her first child. As much as Thal didn't want to feel anything for this child, he knew how her mother was bound to treat her. And he became very protective of his new little sister. Keir, on the other hand, seemed to barely notice her. Now the fighting was between the parents, not the children. Keir began spending longer times out on his 'travels' -- no one knew where he went, or why. Thal had long since accustomed to Keir and his strange, neglectful ways. It seemed that ever since Sabrina's death, something had snapped and Keir was turning into a wild man. He still came around, however, just a few times a month or every other month or so. It was on one of these 'visits home' that Jazella announced she was pregnant again. Shayla was nearing two years, and so far Jazella was treating her seemingly fine. The boys were twenty, eighteen, fourteen, and nine and spent little time at home at all. Anaan and Thal were already desperate to leave and live their own lives, but they knew they couldn't leave nine-year-old Drostan alone.
But the decision was made for them. A few months later Jazella began a terrible miscarriage. Too much blood was lost, and she was already too weak. By the next day she was gone. Keir buried her with a face as hard as stone, not shedding a single tear. He spent an entire week at home, seemingly staring at nothing the entire time. Shayla and Drostan seemed scared of him, and the older boys tried to keep them quiet and entertained elsewhere. It was harder than they had thought, taking care of a two year old, and keeping her quiet. They began to wonder what would ever happen to the poor child. At the end of the week their father suddenly took up the bag he always took when he traveled, kissed each of his children (which was unusual, to say the least), and stood staring at them from the door. He whispered a hoarse sounding goodbye and was gone. His children never saw him again. They weren't at all surprised.
Because their father had deserted his young children, it fell upon the older ones to take care of them. Eventually they decided that they would return to Narnia, where their mother Sabrina had once been known and loved. Someone had to help them there, it was the closest family they had left. They did find help there, in the form of their grandparents. Sabrina had learned her gentle ways from these sweet people, and knowing it felt like an added dagger to Thal's now stony heart. If only his mother had never died, life would be better. But alas, it was not possible to change the past, and Sabrina's parents were good people. Cuyler, Drostan and Shayla began living with them, in the King's court, while Anaan and Thal wandered aimlessly about the world.
What happened in the times while Thal journeyed alone are numerous and not worth describing. He did come home with a deep scar on his right shoulder, and other small battle marks, but no one ever knew what exactly he did. Always though, he came home to check on his younger siblings, who were fairing fine in their new world, even if they were slightly rejected by some. The death of the last grandparent, when Shayla was fifteen, caused Thal to return to Narnia for good. Or, at least for now. He wanted to watch out for his little sister as much as possible.
This was how Thal ended up in the Telmarine army, fighting against the mythical creatures of 'Old Narnia.' He really knew nothing of the old stories, except what his sister had told him. Shayla found a fascination with them, and seemed a little against the fact that her brothers were fighting against them. Thal simply reminded her that if she wanted a place to live she'd better keep her mouth shut. And so she had. Thankfully for them, no one knew that Shayla was not Sabrina's daughter. The only reason Miraz had allowed them to live in his Court was for the reason that Sabrina's father had been held at a high esteem. The story was told that Sabrina and her husband had died, and now their children needed a home; it was true, to a certain extent.
