About You:

Name: Marie Scarlett.

Age: Fifteen.

How did you find us: Affiliation on another site.

Rules Password: [Password Accepted ~Melissa]

Character Basics:

Name: Daemon de SanGreal Cole.

Alias(es)/Nickname(s): Known widely as just Cole, or less commonly, SanGreal.

Gender: Male.

Age: Twenty-eight years of age.

Race: Human.

Status/Title: Captain of the Guard – Status below General, in King Miraz’ army.

Affiliation: For Telmar!

Character Appearance:

Hair: Short, dark brown hair, usually worn uncombed, although he does occasionally slick his hair back from his face, when appearing more professional, rather than a heartless soldier, who has little time for his appearance, even though his face is usually the last thing to be seen in the eyes of his enemies.

Eyes: Cole has strange, brilliant blue eyes, large and round, which clearly do not suit the rest of his demeanour. From his eyes, he could easily be a completely different person, although it was his upbringing that described his character, rather than the way that he looked. Such begins the nature/nurture debate.

Overall: Cole has always been described as handsome, although he only cares for that description when it helps him attract women. He is known as one of the more attractive soldiers of Miraz’ army, as well as fiercely loyal to his king. He is the proud beholder of strong features, chiselled and almost cold, although he would not go as far as to say that he can be read like a book. The expressions shown in his eyes are clearer than those that he voices, most of the time, as he believes that showing any form of emotion other than anger, hatred and loyalty is a weakness.

It would suffice it to say that Cole is his own distinguishing feature. He towers at almost six foot tall, the same height as his father; he is not overly muscle-laden, although he is surprisingly strong, beneath the armour. He is tall, with almost too slender proportions for a male, yet the hidden strength remains, very trim, and very fit.

Almost always seen in the coat that he made himself from the roughest material, the simple article of clothing serves as a reminder that we are all unworthy, until something sturdy, worthwhile and useful is made of the fabric of our existence.
If comparing scars, Cole would win against most people. Through the battles and scraps that he has been in, working his way up to Captain in Miraz’ army, he has taken upon him much, in order to prove his worth, even as such a young man, surrounded by those older and wiser. The most noticeable of these is the pale scar above his right eyebrow. This is clearly only seen because it is outside his clothing. The other scars are hidden, although they remain there nonetheless. The worst is the diagonal scar across his back, from right shoulder to left hip. A blade caught him, sliced through his armour, and scarred the pale, marble skin for good. He feels that he was lucky to survive that encounter, as he lost a lot of blood, and needed stitches.

Portrayal: John Barrowman.

[Note: Pictures and avatars here shall be limited to only those that entirely suit the character, for obvious reasons: Wouldn’t want Torchwood guns or earpieces cropping up now, would we?]

Character Personality:

Likes:
* Women: Specifically, young, beautiful women. More specifically still, young, beautiful women in his bed! However, the man savours his woman, like he would saver his wine.
* Fighting: Having been brought up practically with a sword in his hand, he’s doing fine.
* Power: On the uphill course towards a closer position at Miraz’ shoulder, again, he’s winning.
* Horses: Cole would fight either as infantry, or mounted cavalry, having suitable skill in both concepts of the battlefield. He learnt to ride a horse from a young age, and has enjoyed working with the beasts ever since. His own horse is a chestnut stallion by the name of Sampson.
* Being outside: A cold, rainy day means remaining cooped up inside, doing paperwork, running errands, playing cards or polishing his armour. And there are only so many repairs that can be made to one greatcoat.

Dislikes:
* King Miraz: Although he would never show it, for fear of it coming to light in his proverbial mental absence, he doesn’t care all that much for the King. Regardless of this fact, he is loyal until the end, and would fight to his death for Telmar.
* Caspian X: He’s pesky. 'Nuff said.
* Archery: What’s the point in killing someone with a shaft of wood and some fletching? Cole would much rather fight hand-to-hand combat. Of course, the concept is not helped much by the fact that he is a terrible archer.
* Admitting defeat: In his own perfect world, he would be right all of the time. However, in his Narnian abode, he has had to come to terms with the fact that he makes mistakes, sporadically and few and far-between as they are.
* Sailing: Unfortunately, Cole gets suddenly and violently seasick.

Strengths:
* Clever mind: By far one of the most apt and able soldiers in Miraz’ army, as well as a commander of sorts, he has a quick mind, and battle plans are his speciality.
* Tactics: Analysing the enemy’s actions, then planning accordingly is something Cole has always been chief at. Ultimately, he is a tactician, although would prefer to be out fighting, rather than in a tent, surveying.
* Reading/Writing: Though he is literate, he has never taken any pleasure in writing reports and forms, or reading anything other than battle tactics. Writing means staying inside, and he does not enjoy that…
* Skilled rider: Could fight however his General designated, whether mounted or infantry, although he usually operates as cavalry Captain. Sampson is his warhorse, and the only beast he ever rides.
* Not a coward: 'Courageous' is too far, since he picks on people smaller and weaker than him, but if someone did the same to him, he certainly wouldn't moan or complain about it. He'd just come back later and stab them.

Weaknesses:
* Temper: Cole tends to fly off the handle far too quickly, when he thinks he is right, and that he knows everything, when really, he is incredibly inexperienced.
* Selfish: Sometimes – Or most of the time, depending on who you ask – He can be far too selfish and self-centred.
* Humanity: Being possibly the perfect soldier - Strong, loyal, obedient – He appears to entirely lack a conscience. He would slaughter half of the men in his own regiment if it would gain him more power and position.
* Is always hiding something: Cole never talks about his past, or where he has come from. Because of this, it makes it seem as though he has secrets that he is unwilling to share – Of course, this is true, although his past is the one thing that he will never discuss, no matter what.
* Harlow: Despite everything, if someone were to tell him that they had found Harlow, then he would be ripped from his duties faster than anyone could question his motives.

General Personality: Captain Daemon Cole is a very difficult man to fathom. On one side of the argument, he is a Telmarine soldier, who would fight and die for his King, and enjoys slaughtering Narnians. On the other side of the coin, he appears a different man, when references to Harlow or his family are mentioned, or anything if put upon him about his previous life, rather than his coming to Narnia, and pledging allegiance to the King. Through his training, having learnt that any emotions other than anger, hatred and fierce loyalty are frowned upon in the Guard, he has become a stronger man, although one much more heartless and cold than he ever was. The introduction of his promotion to the rank of Captain, although not yet any higher than that, evoked even more of a fighting spirit within the man, determined to show that he was not just any foreigner.

The absence of any caring nature within him was mostly drawn from a catastrophic moment in his life, when the woman that he loved was taken from him. It was not long after they married that she was pronounced missing, presumed dead. Cole had left her alone in their house for a single day, and she had been taken. Cole was convinced that she had been attacked by Narnians, and vowed to pledge his life to anyone who could help him destroy the creatures forever, and return Narnia to the Telmarines. Narnia had never been right without a human on the throne, and Cole has always been determined to see Miraz there, instead of Caspian, who would give the kingdom back to the Narnians. For this, the cold, heartless services of his were given subjectively to Miraz, when he was no more than twenty-five. Having risen through the ranks at such a young age is an almost unfathomable approach, even for the man in question. He does not believe that he is the best, although has a very strong sense of self-worth, and preservation, that he is determined to keep.

Regardless of the unfeeling monster that he tends to portray as his sole self-persona, underneath there is a different man. He has several different quirks that come about occasionally, showing that he does actually have a personality, rather than some of the other soldiers that he commands, in his regiment. When he does not believe something, or someone, he tends to sceptically raise his right eyebrow, accentuating the pale, skimming scar that lies there, and he stares women in the eyes when he is talking to them, always. And also, he is a very, very deep sleeper.

Character History:

Parents: Daemon's parents remain happily married, even throughout the years that Gray was away fighting, Karina has always been true to her beloved husband, and he to her.

* Lady Karina Violet Cole – Daughter of a minor noble, married when she was a young woman.
* Sir Gray Silvano Cole – Knight of the realm, General in the Calormene army.

Siblings: Daemon is the second eldest child of six siblings: He has two brothers, and three sisters, all within a couple of years of each other.

* Azariel de Rais Cole – Thirty years of age.
* Vanessa Delano Archeron-Cole – Twenty-six years of age.
* Morgana Celeste Cole – Twenty-two years of age.
* Evangeline Violet Cole – Twenty-two years of age.
* Daemon Irius Cole – Twenty years of age.

General History: Daemon is not the completely true blood kin of those that he calls his parents, although no one but Daemon, his father Gray, and the woman that he calls his mother, know anything of this. To anyone else, the resemblances that the second-eldest son shares with the other members of his family are to be expected. Instead, he is the only son of Gray’s previous lover, when he was a much younger man, and not yet married to Karina, although he would be, in less than a year.

His consort was a woman named Elvire that he had not met more than a couple of times, and she was married, yet that did not deter a persistent Gray from getting what he wanted. She became pregnant, and lied to her husband that the child was of his kin, yet she knew for sure that the child was Gray’s. Dymus, her husband, believed her story. However, when the child was born, Elvire immediately sent him to his father, whom she knew already had one son. Whether she wanted to be or not, she was never part of her son’s life again. To her husband, the lies increased, claiming that the child was still-born, so that he would question her no further.

The child, having been taken to the house of his father, grew up believing that he was nothing but another brother. Had he known the truth, then his attitudes towards the rest of those he thought of as family might have been different. As it was, Daemon Cole grew up in the eyes of his father, to be a warrior. So as not to allow the clear skill that he possessed to tarnish, as soon as he was of age, he was recruited into the Calormene army. He was enlisted, and was shown quickly to be a well-adapted commander of his men.

The only thing that stopped him focussing completely on a life of battle, blood and fighting, was the one woman that he cared for. Other than her, he would have been turned directly to the cold, cruel fighter that he did eventually become. Her name was Harlow Shardas, and they had been friends ever since their childhood. Their friendship progressed into more fondness when they were of a marriageable age, and they began to court. The connection as something more than friends was immediate.

Whether he wanted his son to be happy in his future or not, Gray never accepted the young girl as the one that Daemon wanted to spend the rest of his life with. As a result of this, he was effectively banned from seeing her. A close friend of Daemon’s was a younger man, by the name of Mylo Sothale, who worked in the Cole household as general dogsbody. Regardless of this, Daemon treated Mylo as he would anyone else. The manservant was the one who assisted Daemon in escaping from the house, in order to meet with Harlow. A couple of months later, Daemon proposed to his lover, she accepted, and they were married in a small ceremony. Daemon’s family never approved of the girl, although Harlow’s parents, lower down the hierarchy of families, and younger sister practically loved the brave, dashingly handsome soldier.

After their marriage, the two gained a permanent residence in the small hamlet of Mercia, in Calormen, which was perfectly situated, so that Daemon could train at the castle and command when needed, and the solitude that the two so longed for was there as well. However, one day, Daemon left the house for a single day, leaving Harlow alone, and when he returned, tragedy had struck. The house had been practically ransacked, and the only item that was not destroyed was the necklace that he had given the girl when they were teenagers. She never took it off.

Harlow Shardas was pronounced missing, presumed dead, although Daemon Cole never did, and never will, give up hope. He is still sure that she is out there somewhere. But, from that day forth, he was convinced that the Narnians had taken her, and he vowed to join allegiance with anyone would he could assist to destroy them. Ignoring his family, and without letting anyone other than his father know where he was going, Daemon – Now going by just the name ‘Cole’ – Left, for Miraz' Narnian kingdom, volunteering as part of the first regiment sent to Miraz, in order to destroy the Narnians. As did his comrades, Cole pledged his services to the Lord Protector, who went on to become King, though he never got on with Caspian... Serving as a soldier for his first years, his potential was recognised, and he was promoted to Captain of a small cavalry unit.

Cole has serious ambitions, and he is bound to do whatever he can in order to raise his status. He currently only commands a small force, although his vain swagger and pure arrogance tell him that he is perfectly capable of leading more troops. However, the decision of his loyalty is entirely down to the King, to whom Cole would give his life, so long as it defended Narnia from the vicious attack at the hands of the Narnians.

He will do anything, anything whatsoever, to bring back his Harlow.

Running one hand almost lazily through his short, dark hair, Captain Daemon Cole winced as his unsuspecting fingers touched the still-open wound at the back of his head. Even the touch stung, pulling his fingers away with flecks of blood on the tips, although that was not the thing that worried him. The problem was the unthinkable defeat that they were being dealt, at the hands of four children, and some horses! Well, in all honesty, their army was slightly larger than six or seven, although still a tremendously lacking force, compared to the power and strength in the numbers that Miraz had accumulated from his various lords. How they were managing to hold their own against the Telmarines, Cole did not know, although if it was anything that Miraz could employ against them, then he was surprised that he had not yet been called for yet. He was supposed to be fighting – And had been, leading his men, until just now.

Standing up, he made his way across the tent, to the wooden desk at the opposite side of the fabric dwelling. The tents had been hastily constructed at the site of the battle, their white sheets billowing in the breeze, like the wings of giant birds. Cole would have been lying if he had said that he was glad to have been released from the throes of battle for some time. In all truths, the battlefield was where the man had been raised, and where he always had believed that he was drawn to. Of course, the insane sparks of revenge-ridden tendencies that burrowed themselves tightly within the confines of his mind were more helpful for the instigation of bloodlust, rather than any peace negotiations. The soldier was sure that the army would be able to crush their pathetic band of would-be’s, the Kings and Queens of the past with them. They were naught but mere children, although Cole had no complaints over being rid of them, or Caspian X, for that matter. The quicker their entire army could be crushed and shown their place in the new Narnia, the better.

The cold water stung the various cuts and scrapes that had been inflicted upon Cole, as he splashed the liquid across the skin that was not covered by the heavy armour. He was still sweating, the drops mingling with the blood that leaked from at least one heavy wound on his upper arm. A single swish of water brushed it away, renewing the vigour of the formidable, focussed soldier. He was prepared to return to the blood-soaked field, if that was what his General wished of him, although he was certain that there was a more serious meaning to his removal from the site, other than just to refresh himself. Yet still, even after this long, left to nothing but his own thoughts and cleaning his sword, he had not even been spoken to. Cole was beginning to get restless, but there was nothing he could do, especially if it was the King who wished to see him.

No sooner had the thought flickered through his mind than the flaps of the large tent were brushed aside, and a small man, wearing the traditional uniform of Miraz’ household, stood there, his voice hesitant as he addressed Cole.

“C-Captain Daemon Cole?”

Cole nodded, inclining his head in a sharp motion to acknowledge his rank, and his name, waiting for the messenger to continue with this message that was apparently so important. Well, essential enough to call him from the field of battle in order to attend to the matter.

“The King requests to see you. Immediately.”

So it was the King. No one more important than Miraz, of course. The forced yet respectfully loyal smile remaining on his lips as he regained his sword from the wooden desk. It had been cleaned of all traces of blood. Cole steeled himself, and prepared to get shouted at.

This application is very well put-together and clearly much thought-out! The personality is vibrant and the history well-grounded in the time.

There are a few things which are either distracting or canonically problematic:

1. the first of which being the matter of Syracuse. While I understand that the original premise of this character comes from your novel (congrats on that, by the way), we cannot add a fictitious country for the sake of a character's backstory. I would ask you to modify your backstory accordingly, limiting your international references to the human countries of Archenland or Calormen. While this will take out the connections to royalty, you are fortunate that you have a character who stands out well enough on his own that this won't affect his ability to shape events around him.

2. Additionally, the family profiles are interesting but also, as you suspected, a bit distracting for anyone wanting to read your profile about Cole. If you'd like to keep these profiles (they are well written and a part of Cole's life, after all), I'd suggest you put them in the Adopt-A-Character Thread, listing them singly. You can link these postings to this profile if you'd like, but that would take out the lengthy descriptions and images. And it would allow for others to take up such vivid characters if you so desired!

3. I am not certain that he would be the youngest captain in the army. From my understanding of the movies and C.S. Lewis' conceptualisation, the world is based upon the feudal/vassal system, meaning that most lords were military commanders over their own men. It's for this reason that you get young princes with their own armies and nobles with their own forces and men. Lords usually were the military commanders.

4. There are a few typos that, if you hope to use this profile elsewhere, you may want to consider revising -- usually omitted letters, nothing that running it through a spellchecker couldn't remedy.

I look forward to seeing a modified entry! Let me know if you have any other questions and I certainly look forward to interacting with Daemon! As I play Miraz and Lord Captain Drinian, I'm sure we'll see much of each other. Smiley

Thank you for both the compliment, and pointing out the troublesome issues with the profile as it stands. I have made the necessary changes, so I hope they satisfy! Still, I'm sure that there's something I've missed, so poke me if there's anything else that needs changing!

Regarding your potential changes [Which I believe have covered]:

1. I was expecting that this change needed to be made, so my foresight should have corrected me earlier! He's now a Calormene, and I have removed the references to royalty, so he stands alone, if that is alright with everything else.

2. As soon as I get around to it, I will stick the mini-profiles into that thread, but they're temporarily scrapped for now, at least.

3. The character that features in my novel is slightly younger than this version of Cole, so that detail slipped in from elsewhere, and should not have been there! I think all references to that mistake are removed also. And hopefully I've caught all the typos!

If there's anything else that needs changing then I will be more than welcome to do so, and I anticipate some interesting conversation between the respective three characters! =]
