Harpies- Mountains/Coast
Sephen's Log- con.
NOTES:- Inhabit sheer cliffs between borders of Telmar and Calormen, as well as cliffs of islands
- Larger, more robust than forest-dwelling counterparts
- However, larger wingspans make them less maneuverable
- Diet consists mostly of cliff-dwelling plants, rodents and flying prey
- Sea-cliff harpies also eat fish
- Nest on cliffs, in caves and plateaus
- Just as sociable as forest harpies
- However flock size tends to vary more
- Smallest- 6; Largest- 34
- Coastal flocks tend to be much larger
- Mountain flocks smaller
ANATOMY:- Same basic anatomy as forest counterparts; waist down, arms from elbow down, wings and tail are avian, the rest is human
- Tails typically shorter; wingspan much larger
- Females able to screech
- Live births
-
Note of interest: Mountain harpies almost always have 2 offspring in a pregnancy rather than just one; presumed that chances of
survival during childhood are lower than forest harpies, who almost never have more than 1 at a time
- One mate for life
- Lifespan: est. to be similar (150-250 years)
- Height: 6'0" and up
- Wingspan: 15' and up
- Larger wingspan easier to stay aloft, fewer beats
- However, less maneuverable than forest harpies
- Weight: est. 150 lbs and up
- Larger wings, more muscular; thus, heavier
OTHER:- Generally do not bother with clothing during warm months
- Highly territorial
- Adept at fishing, clinging to cliffs and rocks
- Do not tattoo themselves
- Perhaps forest harpies started this as camouflage?
- Unknown whether or not they can take off vertically
- Probably not; wings would clip the ground
- Color of plumage, hair, complexions, eyes; much less diverse and colorful
- Generally tanned, dark hair
- Brown, black or tawny plumage
- Do not adorn themselves
- Much better at swimming than forest harpies
-
Two alphas; one male, one female
- Observed alphas usually the most senior members
-
Mountain- and coastal-living harpies seem to be able to use human speech, unlike forest harpies
